This adventure in Namibia is one of our all-time favorites and is an amateur photographers dream. You’ll enjoy a week exploring the ancient deserts and dunes of Namibia’s Skeleton Coast and Namib Naukluft national parks. See incredible coastlines, seal colonies and shipwrecks. You’ll sleep under canvas and have the chance to learn about the interesting geology and people of this area. Most days include several hours of scenic flights in a small plane over spectacular landscape. This Namibia safari is truly an adventure!
Day 1 – WINDHOEK: Arrive in Windhoek, Namibia. You’ll be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Overnight here. (Airline meals)
Day 2 – SOSSUSVLEI: Enjoy an early breakfast, transfer to Eros Airport by 7 a.m. Take an early morning flight to Sossusvlei in the Namib Naukluft Park. Sossusvlei is reputed to have the highest dunes in the world. The view of the shadow-lined dunes from the air is well worth seeing. After landing at Sesriem, drive into the dunes. The dunes reach heights of 900 feet and more, beckoning those inclined and fit enough to climb them. After a picnic lunch among the dunes, transfer by aircraft to the Wolwedans Dune Camp in the NamibRand Nature Reserve. Enjoy an afternoon drive through the nature reserve. Dinner and overnight at Wolwedans Dune Camp. (B, L,D)
Day 3 – LUDERITZ: After breakfast, fly to Lüderitzbucht to participate in a full day Elizabeth Bay safari. Here, you’ll get to know the town of Lüderitz with its old ghost town relics and diamond mining plants of the early German pioneers. Also explore the forbidden coast and the fur seal colony at Atlas Bay. The late afternoon flight from Lüderitzbucht back to Wolwedans Dune Camp, passes over Spencer Bay with its picturesque Otavi shipwreck, seals basking on the rocky slopes, penguins and other bird life. Dinner and overnight at Wolwedans Dune Camp. (B,L,D)
Day 4– SWAKOPMUND/SKELETON COAST: Have breakfast then fly from Wolwedans Dune Camp to Swakopmund. On the way, you’ll enjoy an aerial view of the famous Eduard Bohlen shipwreck at Conception Bay. After landing and refueling at Swakopmund, continue on in a low-level flight north along the Skeleton Coast past the seal colony at Cape Cross for a light picnic lunch near the beach. After lunch, cross the desert by aircraft to the Ugab formations, a nearly lifeless ‘moon landscape' of numerous black ridges that stand out in stark contrast to the white desert floor. From here we proceed to our Kuidas camp in the Huab. Within walking distance of the camp, amongst the rocks, are ancient rock engravings. Dinner and overnight here. (B, L, D, Dr)
Day 5 – SKELETON COAST: After breakfast, depart by Land Rover to explore the colorful red lavas and yellow sandstones of the Huab River formations. During the drive learn about the fascinating story of the ecological aspects of this environment and its wide diversity of flora and fauna. This includes the Welwitschia Mirabilis, a tree that has been dwarfed by the rigors of the desert climate. Enjoy lunch at Kuidas Camp before flying along the coast to Terrace Bay in the Skeleton Coast Park. The most prominent shipwrecks amongst the coast are the Montrose and Henrietta, still relatively intact. At Terrace Bay, we access the roaring dunes by Land Rover, which always proves to be a stimulating experience. Here you have the chance to visit the beach with its profusion of multi-colored stones consisting of agate, lava, granite and quartz. Another interesting aspect is to see old whale bones scattered along the beach above the high tide mark. Return to the airfield and continue north to Purros Camp in the Hoarusib Valley. Dinner and overnight here. (B, L, D, Dr)
Day 6 – SKELETON COAST: After breakfast, take a scenic drive along the Hoarusib Valley to visit a settlement of the nomadic Himba people, for a chance to gain a cultural perceptive. If lucky, you will have the opportunity to see the desert-dwelling elephants that frequent this valley. From here, continue north along the Skeleton Coast by aircraft to the perennial Kunene River on the Angolan border. The Kaiu Maru shipwreck and pieces from old sailing vessels lie scattered along this part of the coast. From the airfield take a scenic drive by Land Rover then stop for a picnic lunch. After lunch, continue through the mountains and dunes of the Hartmann Valley, which extends to the Kunene River, arriving at Kunene Camp next to the river in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight here. (B, L, D, Dr)
Day 7 – SKELETON COAST/WINDHOEK: Enjoy an early morning boat trip on the Kunene River as it flows through the scenic desert landscape, observing bird life and some crocodiles. Birds vary from aquatic species on the perennial waters, to endemic desert varieties and those that inhabit dense riverine vegetation. After lunch at the camp, fly back to Eros Airport, Windhoek, arriving in the late afternoon. Transfer to your hotel. Dinner and overnight here. (B, L, D)
Day 8 – FLIGHTS: Enjoy breakfast, then transfer to the airport for your flight home. Or, choose to continue your safari to Etosha National Park, Botswana, Victoria Falls or South Africa. (B, Airline meals)
Want to extend your trip? Consider a visit to Etosha National Park and a cheetah conservation project. Also, consider safaris to South Africa, Botswana or and extension to Victoria Falls.
