13-Day Safari Exploring the Famous Garden Route
Explore South Africa from the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape, enjoying family friendly hotels and lodges and activities throughout. You can take the cable car up Table Mountain, watch whales or cape fur seals off the southern coast, ride ostriches in Outdtshoorn, explore the Congo Caves, and visit Monkeyland near Plettenberg Bay. Your final stop is at the malaria-free Addo Elephant National park where you can watch elephants and other wildlife from your veranda.

Upon arrival at Cape Town International Airport you will be met and transferred to the Cape Cadogan Apartments, overnight here.

The Cape Cadogan Apartments (More Quarters) are an extension of the Cape Cadogan Hotel and are an innovative collection of restored Cape houses in a quiet street, with a central dining and reception area. Your two bedroomed apartment has a fully equipped kitchen and is furnished in a fresh and modern atmosphere.

Enjoy breakfast, then get to know Cape Town on your half-day city tour with a Table Mountain excursion. Highlights of the tour include a visit to the colorful Cape Malay district of Bo-Kaap, the Company Gardens and select historical buildings. After breakfast, you’ll take a tour of the Cape Peninsula with visits to the Cape Point Nature Reserve, and visit to Boulders Beach or Betty’s Bay to see African penguins. Continue on to Grootbos Nature Reserve between Hermanus and Gaansbai. Dinner and overnight Grootbos Garden Lodge. (B, D)

Grootbos Garden Lodge sits on the 4,300-acre Grootbos Private Nature Reserve near Gansbaai on the famous Garden Route. This award-winning reserve is home to protected Fynbos and the largest Milkwood forests in the world. The lodge is set within the fynbos and forest clad hills which overlook the whale-watching haven of Walker Bay. Families can enjoy fun activities including adventures on the beaches and rock pools, treasure hunts and horseback rides, all hosted by experienced guides. Other activities include nature drives and hikes to see plants and caves, birding, whale watching and viewing rare African penguins.

After breakfast you will be transferred to Oudtshoorn, known as the ostrich capital of the world, and situated in the beautiful valley between the Outeniqua and Swartberg Mountains. After you check into your hotel, you will visit an ostrich farm where you’ll have a chance to sit on and ride an ostrich, as well as to feed them by hand. Overnight The Thorntree Country House. (B)

The Thorntree Country House is a family-run guesthouse, situated in the Klein Karoo just outside the town of Oudtshoorn on route to the Cango Caves and the picturesque Swartberg Pass. There are 16 luxurious and spacious bedrooms, two of which are inter-leading. The stylish en-suite bathrooms feature warm woodwork and elegant twin basins.

This morning you will depart the hotel after breakfast and make your way to the Cango Caves - an intricate underground wonderland with vast halls, dripstone caverns, and towering formations. Your fully guided tour will take you through a series of halls with names like ‘Rainbow Chamber’ and ‘Fairyland Chamber’, so you may view these stalactites and stalagmites that make this such an incredible attraction to visit. Afterwards, you will leave behind the Klein Karoo and make your way to the coast. Overnight Hog Hollow Country Lodge. (B)

Hog Hollow Country Lodge is situated on the Garden Route near Plettenberg Bay in a private nature reserve. The lodge is set on a steep landscape with breathtaking views of the indigenous forest and the Tsitsikamma Mountains. The 16 suites have full en-suite bathrooms, a lounge area, mini-bar, mini hi-fi, king size bed, and a private wooden deck complete with a lazy hammock. Special features of Hog Hollow are the Forest Sauna and the private Forest Shower with incredible views over the valley.

Spend the next 2 days exploring the surrounding coastline and beaches with your driver-guide. Robberg Beach stretches for miles between the Robberg Peninsula and Beacon Island, and offers the best shore-based seasonal whale watching in the area. After breakfast, leave the Garden Route behind and head for the Eastern Cape, to Addo Elephant Park. These large tracts of land, converted to private reserves surrounding the park, have seen the return of large numbers of lion, elephant and rhino – including the rare black rhino, due to highly successful conservation efforts. RiverBend is situated inside a 3,459,475-acre private concession area of the Addo Elephant National Park, home to the Big Five.
