7-day Cycling Safari to Cape Town, Coast & Garden Route
Cycle along South Africa’s west coast, Garden Route and wilderness areas to enjoy breathtaking scenery, cultural heritage, and close-up wildlife. On this active adventure, you will indulge in exquisite culinary pleasures; from wine and chocolate tastings in the famed Winelands, learning curing & smoking tips from Master Chef of Charcuterie, Neil Jewell, to the art of fine cooking at Karoo Fine Cooking at African Relish. Rides range from 20-30 miles per day. Bicycles provided.

DAY 1 – CAPE TOWN / PENINSULA CYCLE TOUR: You will be driven to your cycle starting point, Signal Hill, with superb views of the city, Robben Island and the Atlantic Ocean. Ride down the slopes into the quaint seaside villages of Bantry Bay and Camps Bay. Continue along the Atlantic seaboard to Chapman’s Peak for a picnic lunch. Shuttle to Cape Point to explore the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve by bike, and spot mountain zebras, antelopes, baboons, ostriches and more. Stop off at Boulders Beach for a chance to see the rare African Penguin in its natural habitat!  Return to Cape Town for dinner and overnight at a Cape Town guesthouse. (L, D)

DAY 2 – CAPE TOWN / WINELANDS CYCLE TOUR: After breakfast, depart Cape Town and start the morning with a vineyard cycle to Welbedacht and Doolhof (two award winning wine farms). Enjoy a wine tasting, cellar tour and barrel tasting. Meet the Master Chef of Charcuterie, Neil Jewell, teaching the art of curing and smoking meats. After a light lunch, continue by bicycle to a chocolate tasting in Franschhoek Village; the pristine Paarl Mountain and Nature Reserve; Fairview Cheese and Wine Estate; and Seidelberg Wine Estate, where your cycling ends. Shuttle to your guest house for an evening at leisure. Dinner and overnight at Cape Valley Manor or similar. (B, L, D)

DAY 3 – CYCLE SAFARI / BUFFELSFONTEIN: After breakfast, drive along South Africa’s west coast to Buffelsfontein Nature Reserve for a cycle safari, getting up close and personal with the Big Five and other African mammals. Later, make your way by car along the west coast, keeping an eye out for whales in season (July-November). Finish the day with a long walk on the beach of Paternoster and dinner at Gaatjie Salt Restaurant, right on the beach. Overnight at Ah! Guesthouse or similar. (B, L, D)

DAY 4 – CYCLE SAFARI / GREAT KAROO: After one of Arnold & Annalise’s signature breakfasts, depart for the quaint Karoo town of Prince Albert, stopping for a museum visit in Matjiesfontein. The first cycle of the day is a cultural & heritage cycle along the wide streets of Prince Albert, out to the best kept secret outside of town, a working fig farm. Enjoy lunch, a tour of the farm, then the afternoon at leisure. In the late afternoon, you will be introduced to the Karoo Fine Cooking at African Relish, a Recreational Cooking School and a member of the ICTA. Prepare a seven course meal, then dine and wine at the chef’s table. End the night star gazing with the town’s resident amateur astronomer. Overnight at African Relish or similar. (B, L, D)

DAY 5 – CYCLE SAFARI / OUDTSHOORN: Rise early and cycle out to one of the many fig farms in this region for an invigorating ride, followed by a sumptuous breakfast prepared by African Relish. Shuttle to the bottom of the Swartberg Pass, among the best exposed fold mountain chains in the world and aUNESCO World Heritage Site. Dinner at a local taverna in Wilderness village and overnight at Ocean View House or similar. (B, L, D)

DAY 6 – CYCLE & KAYAK SAFARI / KNYSNA: After breakfast, travel along the back roads to explore the charming countryside around Ruigtevlei. At the Touws River, kayak along the channels and get up close with the abundant birdlife. Take a short walk through lush, pristine forest to a waterfall and enjoy a picnic lunch in the rainforest. Shuttle to the seaside resort of Knysna, then up to The Heads for unsurpassed views into the ocean. Cycle down to the harbor to enjoy the famous Knysna oysters and a heritage walk through town and historic Waterfront. Gourmet dinner at a restaurant on Thesen Island and overnight at Ocean View House or similar. (B, L, D)

DAY 7 – CYCLE / WILDERNESS / CAPE TOWN: After breakfast, ride your mountain bikes through the back roads and charming countryside surrounding Wilderness. You will be shuttled back to Cape Town in the afternoon, stopping off for a light lunch along the way. (B, L)
